The notion of crime poetry — poetry about crime — may at first seem odd, but every poem can be seen as a crime poem. A stolen heart. A broken vow. A shattered reality. Paths are crossed. Conflicts ensue. Emotions recollected afterward. Or every poem might be seen as a criminal act. An act of independence. A rebellion. An assault on some status quo. Less metaphorically, many famous works of verse cover the waterfront of crime, from the blood-riddled epics, such as The Iliad to Beowulf, to poems grounded in death and violence, “My Last Duchess,” “The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner.” Not to mention the murder ballad.

Directly, explicitly, The Lineup chapbook series continues this tradition of the crime poem. In this series, which I am proud to co-edit with Garrulous Gerald So, Remarkable Reed Farrel Coleman, and Superb Sarah Cortez, crime stories are (hard) boiled down to the intense moments and emotions of verse.

The fourth issue of the series is now out, with works by Ken Bruen, Michael Casey, Reed Farrel Coleman, David Corbett, Mary Agnes Dalrymple, Mary Christine Delea, Jeanne Dickey, H. Palmer Hall, Paul Hostovsky, David Jordan, Laura LeHew, Thomas Michael McDade, Peter Meinke, Keith Rawson, Chad Rohrbacher, Stephen Jay Schwartz, Nancy Scott, Kieran Shea, J.D. Smith, J.J. Steinfeld, John Stickney, Caitlin Elizabeth Thomson, Randall Watson, Charles Harper Webb, Steve Weddle, and Germaine Welch.

See what people are saying about the issue by following the month-long Lineup blog tour.

Prison. War. What better subjects for poetry? The second issue of The Lineup: Poems on Crime is now available. This issue features work by Patrick Carrington, Reed Farrel Coleman, Sophie Hannah, John Harvey, Janis Butler Holm, Jennifer L. Knox, Amy MacLennan, Carol Novack, Deshant Paul, Karen Petersen Manuel Ramos, Stephen D. Rogers, and Christopher Watkins. The cover design is by my pal John Collis, using a photo taken by Erich Wood, also a pal.

Of this issue, former Poet Laureate of Maine Baron Wormser wrote, “Since poets are by definition metaphysical detectives, this collection makes brilliant sense. The poets never flinch nor do they romanticize. Rather they write tersely and deftly of violence large and small, motives confused and clear, endings bloody and mundane. Collectively, they show how poems are bullets of essence that can pierce some very dark shadows.”

Is at large. Be on the lookout. Years ago now, it seems, AsininePoetry.com contributor and Thrilling Detective op Gerald So approached me to see if I wanted to become a cohort in his latest caper. Working with crime-writing pros Patrick Shawn Bagley and Anthony Rainone, I recruited such powerhouse poets as Super Sarah Cortez, Graceful Graham Everett, Dandy Daniel Thomas Moran, and Clever KC Trommer. Then I got my old pals Elric of Pennsylvania and JC of LI to find the right artwork and do the right design, respectively, for the cover. I owe them many, many beers. The result of all this is a pretty slick-looking piece that is now on sale here. Hint. Hint. For $6.50. Cheap! Find me at my desk, and I’ll give you a discount.

How’s everybody doing? Hey, Fairfield! Hey, Kansas! Hello, Emmaus! So, some news: I have been invited to co-edit a poetry chapbook on crime by the crazily prolific Gerald So, along with crime-writing stalwarts Anthony Rainone and Patrick Shawn Bagley. Now, some would say my poetry is criminal. But this is something else: poems about crime. Murder. Arson. Parking violations. What have you. More specifically, noirish poems on crime. I think. See, we’re still shuffling through our submissions and our genres, trying to get a layout of the job, as it were. The chapbook will be called The Lineup (get it?!), and we’ve got some glinty-eyed, square-jawed poetry in there from some hard-boiled versifiers. It’s just a chapbook, yes, so maybe we won’t get on Regis, but that also means it will be cheap, and so we expect all our friends to buy 15 copies apiece. We’ve got some cover art, and this picture to the left isn’t it, but it sure is purdy. Anyway, I’ll let you in on the rumpus as things progress.

My segment was filmed right outside of Cornelia Street Cafe. My hair’s way too short, but I think the grungy beard was coming in nicely. If I make any sense in the finished film, that’s totally by accident, since I just downed three glasses of wine before the cameras started rolling.
