The reason I am smiling so in this picture is that I am not wearing pants. That morning my teacher Mr. Quinn had eviscerated my report on the recently completed Twin Towers; I’d warned that they were easy targets for ideological extremists. He said it was nonsense. He’d reacted similarly to my report on the potential for personal home computing devices. ”Who would need that in their house?” he wrote in large red letters across the top of my construction sheet cover, on which I had drawn a large plastic box with a rectangular screen and a series of tubes across the top. In that light, I never turned in my new translation into Spanglish of Dante’s Divine Comedy.
